Guardian of the night. Keeper of the threshold.

The ruru (morepork owl) holds a revered place in Māori tradition — a kaitiaki (guardian) associated with watchfulness, protection, and the spiritual world. In whakairo, the ruru is often expressed through the wheku form: a stylised ancestral face with wide, piercing eyes, a prominent nose, and a tongue extended in challenge or greeting.

The wheku is one of the most powerful motifs in Māori carving. Found on the facades of wharenui (meeting houses) and on taonga throughout Aotearoa, it represents the presence of tīpuna — ancestors watching over the living. A ruru wheku brings together two potent symbols: the vigilance of the owl and the mana of the ancestor.

This piece is hand-carved from native New Zealand wood, shaped with precision and care to honour the depth of this tradition.

Every carving is unique — contact us first

No two ruru wheku we carve are the same. Each piece is guided by the whakapapa and kaupapa of the person it is made for — the patterns, forms, and details woven into the carving carry meaning specific to you and your whānau.

Contact us before purchasing. We need to kōrero with you about your whakapapa and kaupapa before we begin. Only then can we carve a piece that truly represents you.
