Whakairo

A weapon of mana. A taonga of identity.

The patu is one of the most iconic and sacred objects in Māori culture — a short-handled striking weapon carried by warriors and rangatira as a symbol of authority, strength, and prestige. Traditionally crafted from pounamu (greenstone), whalebone (paraoa), or wood (rākau), the patu is both a weapon and a deeply personal taonga that connects the bearer to their tīpuna.

This patu is hand-carved from native New Zealand wood, shaped and finished with care to honour the traditions of whakairo. Each curve, each line, each form is intentional — a reflection of the maker’s skill and the story it is carved to carry.

Every patu is unique — contact us first

Because a patu is a deeply personal taonga, we do not begin carving until we have kōrero with you. We need to understand your whakapapa, your kaupapa, and what this piece will mean to you and your whānau. The design, patterns, and details are shaped around your story — no two patu we create are ever the same.

Contact us before purchasing to begin the conversation. Only then can we carve something that is truly yours.
