Raukura (Feathers)
Raukura is a Māori term with deep spiritual and cultural significance, most commonly referring to a white feather or a plume of feathers. It serves as a symbol of peace, purity, and spiritual protection within Te Ao Māori (the Māori world).
Cultural Significance
- Symbol of Peace: It is a hallmark of the Parihaka passive resistance movement. Followers of the prophets Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kākahi wore the raukura (specifically three white albatross feathers) to signify their commitment to peaceful opposition against land confiscation.
- Spiritual Protection: It is often seen as a "korowai" (cloak) of feathers providing guidance, strength, and sanctuary.
