He Piupiu — To Swing, To Move, To Live

The piupiu swings and sways with every movement in kapa haka — its rhythm amplifying the beat, the breath, and the expression of the dancer. These earrings carry that same energy: movement as meaning, adornment as performance. Māui himself spun harakeke into unbreakable muka rope to slow the sun and fish up Te Ika-a-Māui. The material of the piupiu once held the world together.

The Pattern — A Universe in Miniature

The four squares on the front represent Ngā Hau e Whā — all the peoples of the world and the four directions — and the great post Tāne-tokotoko-o-ngā-rangi that holds the heavens aloft, keeping Ranginui and Papatūānuku apart. This separation is Te Ao Mārama — the world of light — the very act that made life possible. The white and red arrows pointing inward represent Ranginui and Papatūānuku themselves, forever reaching toward each other across the divide.

On the reverse, the waharua — two diamonds — draw from tukutuku, the lattice panels of the wharenui, which encode the observation of the night sky. Waharua means “two mouths”: the threshold between Te Ao Mārama and Rarohenga (the underworld). It references the journey of Mataora, who descended to prove his devotion through tā moko, and returned bearing Te Rangihaupapa — a sacred cloak born from transformation. From the stars above to the roots below, these earrings hold the full axis of existence.
