Poutama Earrings (Large)
Handcrafted Māori poutama earrings in a bold large size, made in Aotearoa New Zealand — available in a range of vibrant colours.
He tohu whakapapa, he tohu mātauranga — a symbol of lineage, a symbol of knowledge.
The poutama is one of the most sacred patterns in Māori raranga and tukutuku — a stepped staircase that tells the story of Tāne Mahuta's ascent through Ngā Rangi Tūhāhā, the twelve separated heavens, to retrieve Ngā Kete o te Wānanga: the three baskets of cosmic knowledge gifted to humanity by Io-matua-kore, the supreme creator.
Each step of the poutama represents a rangi climbed, a threshold crossed, a new level of understanding reached. To wear the poutama is to carry that journey — the pursuit of mātauranga, the honouring of whakapapa, and the courage to ascend.
These large earrings make a bold, unapologetic statement. Handwoven from synthetic weave with metal hooks colour-matched to complement each tae, they move with you — lightweight despite their presence, eye-catching without effort.
